Silly in Salzburg

02

Day 2

It was an another early morning, but thankfully an easy one. We had an early train ride to Salzburg, but since our hotel was so close to the train station, it didn't take us long to get there. It was an easy and direct ride that dropped us off in the heart of town.

Our first stop of the day was to Mirabel Gardens, most well known as being the location of the Do Rei Mi song from the Sound of Music. Matt was a dear (although not a doe) as I was being silly reenacting some of the scenes from the film.

After my musical fun, we headed back across the bridge to the Old Town part of Salzburg where you'll find most of the tourism. We started our day doing our Rick Steves tour of the town in our guidebook, which was a great way for us to get us familiarized. One of the highlights was seeing the birthplace of Mozart - both the actual home as well as the church he grew up playing in every Sunday.

Mozart is certainly the rockstar around town. Most nights you'll be able to find some Mozart concert, and you'll also see the Mozart candy available for purchase everywhere. Buy it. Eat it. It's worth it!

One of the things we learned with our guidebook is how much Italian-inspired art you'll find around town. One of the members of Austrian royal family admired Italian art and decided to bring it to Salzburg. This includes an exact replica of the famous Trevi Fountain in Rome!

The large fortress is town is called Hohensalzburg. While it looks quite commanding, it was largely there for show and to scare anybody from wanting to attack. It obviously worked, as the only time it came under siege was during the German Peasants War.

The line to ride the funicular up to the fortress was quite long, so we decided to take the cheaper route and walk it up. We didn't actually pay to go inside, but it was still a nice place to pause and take in views of the town - and a good work out.

Later that night we went back to the hotel where we met our guide and the rest of our My Way tour. Some had already been in Europe for days while others were literally right off the plane. After our short meeting, we went back out to take in the fresh evening and grab a nice dinner in Old Town. More pretzels and apple strudels included!

Go to Halstatt
