Munching in München

Day 1

Willkommen to Deutschland! We decided to extend our vacation an extra day by arriving to Munich right before the tour begins. I went to Munich a few years ago and loved it.  And as its only a short train ride to Salzburg, it seemed like a perfect fit.

We arrived early in the morning, which gave us a full day. With it being our honeymoon, we splurged and used all of our miles to fly first class, so we were fairly well rested by the time we landed. Our hotel for the night was near the main train station in town, so we had an easy time getting in. Although our room wasn't ready, we were able to drop off our bags at the hotel and get going on our day! They were even nice enough to lend us an umbrella for the day, as it was sprinkling a bit outside.

We started our morning by walking to the main area of town. It was a Sunday morning, so the church bells were ringing was we walked around waiting for the city to awaken.

Our first stop for the day was to visit the Munich Residenz, the former home of the Wittelsbachs, the German royal family. This is one place I didn't get a chance to visit on my last trip, so I was excited to finally go! While much of Munich was harmed during WWII, the Residenz had comparably less damage.

This is one of the reasons I wanted to visit Europe - I love having the opportunity to walk through history. There were so many intricate rooms we explored - the grotto, the hall of antiquities, multiple chapels. In one of the halls they had portraits of all the family members. I was looking for the Hock name, but alas I could not find it.

It was raining hard by the time we left the Residenz, so we decided it was the perfect time to head back to the hotel to check in and take a quick rest. However, we did stop for our first pretzel of our trip! As most people know, I'm a pretzel fiend and couldn't wait to have as many as possible!

After a quick rest, the rain had ended and we were ready to explore some more. We wandered over to the English Garden and spent a few hours just walking around. We enjoyed some fresh air next to the Japanese teahouse.

Jetlag was starting to set in, so we headed over to the Hofbrauhaus for an early dinner. We enjoyed yet ANOTHER pretzel and I ordered a Radler, which is a summer beer or half lemonade and half beer. I was surprised with how large the stein was that came out, but I was a trooper and finished the whole thing.

For dinner we both got some sausages and kraut - very delicious! We also ordered our first strudel of the trip. Sadly we were leaving right as the polka band started playing. I had a lot of fun my last trip to HB singing the Prost song, so it was a bit disappointing to miss out.

After dinner we headed back to our hotel to crash. We had a long day on little sleep and had an early morning ahead of us.
